Man Arrested In Alleged Surf Rage Attack

Victim Suffers Shattered Eye Socket In Attack

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 September, 2006 : - - HAU`ULA, Hawaii -- Police arrested a surfer after an attack in the waters of Hau`ula Beach on Sunday that left another man with a shattered eye socket. Police said that the case is puzzling because the victim has no idea why the other man attacked him, and now fears more violence.

Body surfers at Pounders in Hau`ula said that the beach is not known for being a violent surf spot. "All the time I body surfed out here, I only saw one fight. I never saw too much trouble out here," body surfer Harlan Kahawaii said.

It happened shortly after a 19-year-old man arrived at the beach. The two men were in the water when something sparked a surf-rage incident, causing one man to punch the other in the face. The attacker then held the victim under water, police said. The victim is an Oahu resident who doesn't know his attacker or why the man wanted to hurt him, police said.

The victim ended up with a shattered eye socket. The man said he thought he was going to drown before breaking free. One day after the attack, police arrested Darren Iese, 27.

The incident has left body surfers wondering what went wrong. "The waves don't get that great here, it never gets that crowded so it's more just a friendly spot. North Shore and Sandy (Beach) are definitely more aggressive, where people are trying to get waves and compete for waves," body surfer Josh Frager said.

If all this sounds like part of a seductive sales pitch, that's essentially what it is, a rough precis of what daily life might be like on the Best Offshore Odyssey, an innovative new approach to adventure travel. In Nov-ember a 60ft, purpose-built catamaran will set sail from the island of St John in the US Virgin Islands. Aboard will be six investors, hand-picked for the privilege of shelling out close to £20,000 each, and each able to handle a power-kite on the open ocean.

Part of an "expedition" that will last for the next five years, they will sail with one aim: to find the best - and as yet undiscovered - kitesurfing locations in the world.

The idea was born in 1998 when Gavin McClurg, the American who is in charge of the project and will skipper the boat, took ownership of a 52ft yacht from his father. "While I could afford the down payment," he explains, "I had to find a way of making it [financially viable]." The answer was a modest chartering business, and over the next seven years McClurg sailed countless nautical miles, noting down remote spots with the wind and waves one day to accommodate his other passion, the then relatively new sport of kitesurfing.

Rocky Chatwell

PORTLAND - A Portland youth is skyrocketing his way up to stardome in kite boarding. Rocky Chatwell has won the PKRA North American Championship, and he's only been doing this for two years. Now, the golden boy is eyeing the world tour.

The 16-year-old blonde, doing his thing recently off the Portland shoreline in Corpus Christi Bay. As you can see, Rocky Chatwell, has it. You may have seen him competing in the Velocity Games, but winning the Pro Kite Riding Association North American Title is big stuff. It's his greatest moment.

"By far, yes. I'm totally stoked about it. I did the best I could," said Chatwell.
